Urinetown was my second fully fledged Lighting Design at Jacksonville University. The production team and I settled on an Industrial design that supported the idea of oppression. To support this, we exposed and lowered the electrics, and added boom and ladder positions. We then cheated these onstage to create a visible lighting rig that completely surrounded the actors, almost as if it was pressing in on them. In addition, we used billowing haze to create a smog like effect.
